24 Hour Row for New Women’s Eight

In support of women’s sporting excellence and opportunity, in March 2024 Liz Blower from the Australian National University Boat Club (ANUBC) will be rowing continuously for 24 hours to raise funds for a new racing eight for our female athletes.

Your donation will make this impressive feat worthwhile, and support our student and club athletes by giving them the equipment to pursue their goals and compete up to the highest levels.

Our club

ANUBC is an entirely volunteer-run club, which nonetheless remains one of the leading university rowing programs in Australia, supporting many elite, territory and national representative athletes. In 2023, ANUBC finished 7th of 170 clubs at the Australian Championships (the highest ranked volunteer club), and was a finalist for Rowing Australia’s Club of the Year.

In Australia, 50% of girls drop out of sport entirely by age 17*. Despite this trend, ANUBC has strong participation from female athletes, coaches, and volunteers at all levels, from complete beginners to elite competitors. Our High-Performance female athletes have represented Australia in a range of international regattas, including World Championships and Paralympic representation, and in 2023 ANUBC athletes made up 7 of the 8 rowers in the ACT representative Women’s Eight.

Our cause

Her passion for this club and community has inspired Liz to raise money for a new women’s eight. In March 2024, Liz will set out in a single scull, and row the waters of Lake Burley Griffin through day and night, for 24 hours for this cause – please make her efforts worthwhile!

Your support will allow our athletes to have access to equipment that allows them to remain competitive and perform at their best on the water.

Our fundraising goals

We aim to raise $50,000 for a new women’s racing eight. Here is what we can buy, depending on how much we raise:

  • $1,500: a new cox box microphone and speaker system

  • $10,000: a new set of eight oars

  • $30,000: a new coxless quad/four

  • $50,000: a new racing eight

Our donors

All donors will be recognised with their names recorded on an honour board to be displayed in the ANUBC boat house.

The highest donation received over $10,000 will receive naming rights for the new boat, subject to committee approval.

The club has done well in recent years, winning medals at state and national events, and seeing members selected onto state and national representative teams. We also have a large and active membership of people who row simply for activity and enjoyment. Our operations provide opportunities across the full spectrum, from masters to high performance, intervarsity, club, and junior.

All of this is due to excellent coaching, access to equipment and facilities, a diligent committee, and the support of the ANU Sport and Recreation Association.

To continue to aspire to provide such opportunities for our members ANUBC must build its fleet of high quality equipment.

We seek your support and ask you to consider making a donation to the ANUBC Fleet Renewal Project.
